From Physical to Spiritual Training

Cliff Ethan Sim found purpose in helping people achieve their physical goals in his 18 years of work as a gym trainer in the fitness industry. However, it wasn’t until he was on an outreach assignment with a group of young evangelists at the local hospital that he saw how the ministering of gospel and song blessed many patients. The experience gave him a sense of fulfilment beyond what he attained in his job.

“I felt a calling to contribute more significantly to training the next generation in Godliness,” shares Cliff, Ministry Executive, Youth & Young Adults, “my personal faith journey then led me to Lighthouse Evangelism, where I now combine my passion with the utmost privilege of ministering to youth and young adults.”

Growing deeper in the Lord

Since embarking on the leap of faith, Cliff has never looked back, though the journey may be challenging at times.

“One of the biggest challenges for me was in adjusting to the different dynamics of ministry work compared to working in the fitness industry. The pace and nature of work are different and require a different set of skills and knowledge. To ensure I could do good work, I took on ministry and theology training to be adequately equipped,” says Cliff.

Working in the ministry deepened Cliff’s faith and love for God’s word.

“Spiritually, my faith has deepened as I witness the transformative power of God in the lives of the youth and young adults that I work with. I have also developed an appreciation and love for God’s word, which anchors me when the going gets tough,” Cliff discloses.

At Lighthouse Evangelism, the Youth Ministry (Speedlight) is anchored on supporting and guiding our youths from 13 to 18 in their spiritual growth, while the Young Adults Ministry (Blazelight) is targeted at young adults from 19 to 35 as they learn and grow with a close-knit community that endeavours to lead Christ-centered lives.

“We believe that in our services, when the scripture is faithfully preached, God’s voice can be audibly heard, and Jesus Christ can be tangibly seen and experienced,” Cliff exhorts, “Hence, the most fulfilling part of my job is witnessing the changes in precious lives through the genuine encounters that our young people have with God.”

“This privilege to disciple young people, helping them navigate challenges and discover their calling through the exposition of God’s word, is incredibly rewarding.”

Balancing between ministry and family

Juggling work and family is no easy feat, particularly when you are working with young people. That is particularly the case for Cliff, who is expecting his third child.

“Balancing personal life and ministry commitments is an ongoing challenge that requires intentional effort and discipline. Setting boundaries ensures that I have time for my family and my personal time, which might sometimes be overwritten due to pastoral emergencies,” Cliff confesses. Open communication with my wife about my ministerial commitments and finding ways to involve my family in ministry activities also helps maintain this balance, particularly with a third child on the way!”

Embark on a journey of personal and spiritual growth

For those considering full-time ministry, Cliff advises coming on board with an open heart and a willingness to serve, “Be prepared for a journey of personal and spiritual growth – While challenging, the work is incredibly rewarding.”

“Embrace the privilege to make a real difference in people’s lives, knowing that your work has eternal significance.”
