Weekly Devotionals – 12 May 2025

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,

who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The opening seven verses of Romans are more than a standard greeting; they are Paul’s declaration of identity, mission, and message. From the outset, Paul presents himself as a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, and set apart for the Gospel of God. In these few verses, we see the heartbeat of a man utterly transformed by grace and commissioned with a divine purpose.

Paul’s story, rooted in Jewish tradition and Roman privilege, took a radical turn on the Damascus Road. From a persecutor of the Church to a proclaimer of Christ, his life exemplifies the power of the Gospel to redefine one’s identity and ignite a life of mission.

Marked by Servanthood

Paul doesn’t lead with credentials but with submission. Calling himself a bondservant speaks of willing slavery to a beloved Master. It’s a title of devotion, not degradation. Imagine a firefighter running toward danger because they’ve vowed to protect and serve. That’s Paul, running toward the call of Christ, not for reward, but out of allegiance.

Do you define your life by accomplishments or by allegiance to Christ? The Gospel starts by reordering who owns our hearts.

Anchored in the Gospel

Paul’s message is not a new invention—it is both ancient and prophetic, rooted in the promises of Scripture. At its core is Jesus Christ, descended from David according to the flesh, yet declared to be the powerful Son of God through His resurrection. His lineage affirms His full humanity; His resurrection confirms His divine nature.

Like a symphony composed long before its performance, the Gospel is God’s timeless plan unfolding through history, with Christ as its glorious crescendo. Knowing its divine origin gives us unshakable confidence to proclaim the Gospel in a skeptical world.

Commissioned with a Purpose

Paul’s apostleship wasn’t self-appointed. He was commissioned and sent to call all nations to obedient faith, not mere belief, but life-altering allegiance to Jesus. Here, he reminds the Roman believers (and us) that we are called, loved, and set apart. Like them, we don’t speak our opinions but represent our King’s authority. That’s our role as believers. We must represent Christ faithfully in word and deed. Our calling isn’t passive. It’s a mission. Let our obedience speak louder than our words.

These seven verses aren’t casual, but weighty declarations of a life owned, anchored, and commissioned by the Gospel. Consider the following:
1.  Reflect on our identity: Are we living as Christ’s bondservants?
2.  Reaffirm our trust in the Gospel: Is Jesus the center of our message and hope?
3.  Reignite our mission: Am I living with intentional obedience to bring others to faith?

Start today by surrendering anew to Christ. Study His Word. Proclaim His Gospel. Serve with His heart. Like Paul, be marked by the Master—wholly His, fully used.
