“Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11, ESV)

The theme for our church this year is the “Year of Intercession”, and we have been focusing on praying for our church, churches across Singapore, and for our Nation. It is an opportunity for us to each grow in our prayer life too! To that end, I would like to offer a scriptural prayer from Psalm 86:11 that encourages us to press on in faith, and most importantly, to know God more deeply in the process.

  1. Teach me Your way, O LORD

In this verse, the Psalmist, David, asks the Lord to teach him His ways. Likewise, we can let go of our old ways and invite the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of our lives. As a disciple of Christ, I want to live out His ways and invite the Lord to transform my life. It says in John 15:15, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” As followers of Jesus, let us be intimately taught in His ways and humbly draw near to God to know and understand His heart for us.

  1. I want to walk in Your truth

The Psalmist also desires to walk in God’s truth. I want to be privy to the deeper inner truths and wisdom from the Lord’s heart and partner with the Holy Spirit to live it out. One such truth that we know is that Jesus is our Healer. Lighthouse Evangelism is called to be a Healing Centre, and as Lighters, we have a spiritual inheritance to know and reveal Christ as the Divine Physician. We have had multiple testimonies of people who have come to our church and were miraculously cured of cancer, heart problems, eczema, back pains, mental health issues, and many more. Let us grow in boldness and courage to pray for others in pain. We have the love of God, the power of God and the Spirit of our wonder-working God living inside of us. Take those steps of faith and obedience whenever His Spirit prompts you to trust and obey, while leaving the results to Him. God’s love never fails.

  1. Unite my heart

Next, the Psalmist prays to God to “Unite (his) heart”. Our heart is often divided between God’s ways and the contesting ways of a fallen world, a deceitful devil, and a sinful nature. Have you ever felt confused and frustrated between various competing choices? Pray as the Psalmist did! We must constantly be watchful and prayerful to know what our heart is leaning towards and not be overtaken by our desires for money, pride, and temporal pleasures. In this year of intercession, let us also unite our hearts as one church in Lighthouse Evangelism to seek His Kingdom first – To keep winning souls for the Lord and to store up the eternal rewards that will never perish. The more we store up for ourselves, treasures in heaven, the more we can be sure that our heart is in the right place.

  1. I want to fear Your name

The Amplified Bible elaborates how we should fear God’s name – “with awe-inspired reverence and submissive wonder” (Psalm 86:11). Even as we endeavour to grow deeper in intimacy and in our friendship with God, we must not do away with the awe that our King of Kings and Lord of Lords command. We must never lose our reverence for our Heavenly Father – It will lead us down the path of relying on ourselves, rather than on God.

Let us remember to pray this prayer daily, “Teach me Your way, O Lord. I want to walk in Your truth. Unite my heart, I want to always remain in awe, reverence, and submission to You, my God and King. In Jesus’ Name, Amen”.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
